ARTIST STATEMENT

For the past 5 years I have been largely concerned with a series of abstracted landscape paintings under the umbrella title ‘Fragile Island’. However, a recent series of events led me to re-evaluated what is important in both life and art, and I have found that I am drawn to examine more deeply the relationship between creativity, spirituality and the natural world.

One result of this development is that I have broadened my subject matter to include figurative elements that I place within an abstract space, most often but not always a landscape-based environment. These are not intended to be representational; rather they work as expressive symbols whilst providing the viewer with a way of engagement.

In making these new paintings I draw upon my existing process that involves activating the surface with abstract marks that build layers, many of which will be covered up but continue to add richness and depth. I see the new figurative elements in similarly abstract terms, in that they are expressed using the same personal language of marks, colour, texture, line and form. They help establish the overall composition, structure and scale of a piece, while the spatial tensions they create provide the means by which to express the personal discoveries, feelings and sensations I aim to convey through the work.

BIOGRAPHY

My creative career began in the UK as a social documentary photographer, followed by seven years as facilitator of a hospice-based project making books and films with people at the end of life. A graphic design degree followed but finding commercial work restrictive, I moved to West Cork in 2012 and committed fully to life as a painter, which offers the solitude, risk and freedom to which I am temperamentally best suited.

Alongside painting, I love life drawing and teaching adults the principles of mark making and colour, with play as a means of experimentation and exploration. I also enjoy the challenges of exhibition curation and have been involved in several environmental campaigns through the arts.

I have exhibited widely including at the RA Summer Show in London, the RUA in Belfast, and the Vue Art Fair, RHA, Dublin. Paintings are in the OPW and Cork County Council art collections as well as in private homes in Germany, Switzerland, the U.S.A., the U.K. and Ireland.
